If you have received an eviction notice or are facing multiple issues which may result in eviction, Strycker’s Bay is committed to aiding and resolving housing-related dilemmas to the best of our ability with the tools and resources we have to navigate the NYC housing system.
A SBNC Housing Counselor coordinates a variety if resources which include but are not limited to:
-SCRIE (Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption)
-DRIE (Disability Rent Increase Exemption)
-Section 8 retroactive certification and recertification issues
-applications for emergency rent assistance and ongoing public assistance
-negotiation with landlords and management offices, and assistance to tenants to address a Notice To Cure
Since tenants can be very intimidated by housing court, therefore a large part of our Housing Counselor’s focus is education, counseling and information. The Housing Counselor will assist tenants for whom legal action has already been initiated. Based on an intake interview, necessary resources and action will be coordinated such as legal representation, emergency rent assistance, request for additional time, and counseling on how to get needed repairs. This eases the tenants concerns and gives them the tools with which to go through the housing court process smoothly. Tenants armed with information are far better equipped to defend themselves and are less likely to sign court-ordered stipulations they cannot meet.
